I create illustrated worlds and animated stories about memory, identity and change.

For publishers, animation teams and cultural projects

Hello, my name is Aidina Zhamalova. I am an illustrator and animator working across book illustration, visual development and animation. I create expressive visual worlds for stories about memory, identity and change. I am interested in collaborating with publishers, animation studios and cultural organizations on projects that need a clear and distinctive visual language

My approach

I turn the emotional core of a story into images and movement.

I find the turning point, then develop a visual language that carries it across a book, a sequence or an animated film

I start by looking for the emotional core of a story: the moment a character makes a choice, a memory returns or hope begins to fade. Then I look for a visual idea that can make this change clear to the audience. In illustration, that idea might take shape through a recurring object, a color shift or a carefully composed scene. In animation, I can develop it through character movement, timing and a sequence of images. I use these choices to give each project a consistent visual language, whether it becomes a book, a calendar series or an animated film.

The Drunken Beauty

post

Illustration, Card designBrief: Translate a classic opera into a visual emotional arc.Visual idea: Each card marks a shift from hope and desire toward isolation and collapse.Outcome: An illustrated card series designed to carry the story through play.

The Drunken Beauty is based on a classic Peking opera about Yang Guifei, a woman from the Tang dynasty. While waiting for the emperor at a banquet, she is left alone. Her disappointment turns into a night of drinking and dancing, and her emotions move between love, jealousy, longing and loneliness.I approached the story as an emotional progression. Each card represents a different moment in the heroine’s experience, moving from hope and desire toward isolation and inner collapse. The changing images make the story readable as a sequence, while the card format invites the viewer to encounter it one image at a time. The result is an illustrated card series that connects the visual design of the cards with the emotional arc of the opera.

Inner Seasons

post

Illustration, CalendarBrief: Show a full year through a consistent visual system.Visual idea: Everyday objects become containers for miniature scenes, with a shared palette and grain texture tying the months together.Outcome: A calendar illustration series built around «a year inside objects».

Inner Seasons is a calendar illustration series based on the idea of «a year inside objects». Each month is represented by a familiar object, such as a jar, a boot or a teapot. Inside each object is a small world with its own scene and characters. The contrast between the simple outer shape and the detailed world inside gives each image a sense of scale and discovery. A limited palette and grainy texture connect the illustrations, so every month feels distinct while still belonging to the same series. The project turns the calendar into a collection of small visual stories about the changing moods of the year.

Green Morning

post

Book illustrationBrief: Make the hope of a greener Mars visible in images.Visual idea: Follow the protagonist’s dream of planting trees and bringing air to a barren planet.Outcome: Illustrations for Green Morning, a story from The Martian Chronicles.

Green Morning is a story from The Martian Chronicles. Its protagonist dreams of planting trees on Mars and giving the planet air. I used this central hope to guide the illustrations. The images follow a journey through a strange and often barren landscape. The scale of the planet gives the story a sense of isolation, while the character’s work toward new growth brings a more intimate feeling to the images. The changing landscapes connect the adventure with the possibility of a different future. This project allowed me to work with science-fiction imagery while keeping the story centered on a simple human wish: to help life take root.

A Collection of Tailcoats

post

Animated short film, Based on a story by Andrei BitovBrief: Show the pressure to fit into a group.Visual idea: Guests change their faces to match the person they are speaking to.Outcome: A short film about choosing between social conformity and one’s own path.Created with Polina Podeyko and Viktorya Isaeva.

A Collection of Tailcoats is an animated short film based on a story by Andrei Bitov. The story takes place at a formal gathering where guests drink champagne, give toasts and talk. As they speak, they keep changing their faces to match the person in front of them. The main character tries to fit into this group, but with every new conversation it becomes harder to keep changing his face. The story builds toward a choice: will he continue to follow the group’s rules, or will he choose his own path?
