About Me

Hello there! I’m Anna Klimova, an illustrator and graphic designer.

I enjoy experimenting with different mediums and styles to create illustrative series that feel like their own distinctive worlds.

What I can create for you:

• Illustrations for books and articles
• Designs for merchandise and various objects
• Graphic design (posters, book covers, etc.)

I have a passion for creating art that feels textured and tactile and combining digital art with other mediums, such as clay and appliqué, so I can create a visual language that can truly set your product apart.

Troitsky Cathedral

Original size 0x0

A project for the Russian postal service. The task was to create an illustration series that:

• could be printed individually on postcards • also functioned as a cohesive line of large-scale exhibition pieces • revolved around the cities of Russia’s «Golden Ring» • included food as a major theme

Approach

To satisfy these complex and somewhat contradictory criteria, I knew I needed a strong core concept rooted in the cities' culture. In my research, I came across the beautiful architectural landmark of the Cathedral and decided to use it as a sort of synecdoche for the entire city of Sergiev Posad.

The final composition is inspired by orthodox altars. It allowed me to reflect the location’s spirit while unifying the series' two aims—a set of small illustrations and a larger art project.

Style

For this project, I developed a bespoke visual language incorporating:• lineless art • bold brushstrokes • blurred contours • color-blockingThe goal was to create a sense of atmosphere while maintaining visual impact in an exhibition setting and remaining readable in a small format.

For me, this project was an exercise in not only a new painting technique but also in incorporating local cultures and historical influences. You can view it in full here.

Bluebeard

The task for this project was to create illustrations for a classic fairytale, with otherwise unlimited creative freedom. As a result, this series is more experimental, verging on psychedelic in its tone.

Approach

My personal goal for this project was to play with combining «childish» and «adult» styles of art and storytelling.

The source material lent itself well to this—a children’s story about a murderer. Since the folklore plot is so well-known, I could render the illustrations more abstract without sacrificing comprehensibility.

Original size 2144x1286

Style

Keeping in line with the theme of childhood, I decided to experiment with the medium of appliqué.

This lent itself well to a style centered on solid bright colors and geometric shapes. It also meant I had to get creative in making the characters look original and recognizable.

Most of my work for Bluebeard was cut out of colored cardboard, with a few elements added digitally later.

This series gave me the opportunity to delve deeper into creating a unique technique and visual style, and to produce something more artistic.

Poster Design

I also create work in other areas of graphic design, such as posters. I try to take advantage of my illustrative skills to create something unique that lies at the intersection of the two fields.

These two posters for the stage play «My Uncle Has Most Honest Principles» emerged from this idea of combining the two mediums. The objective here was to utilize the play’s own imagery and set dressing, such as the prominently featured clotheslines.
