About the Project
Snowboarding was invented in a regular garage and was subsequently banned from ski resorts for a long time. How a board for winter fun became a real sport and an entire culture—who perfected it, and what role did Russia play?

Visual Solutions
The long-read’s visual metaphor is an 80s–90s snowboard magazine—a time when snowboard culture thrived on paper. Journalistic techniques were drawn from the mood board: full-width headlines, overlapping archival photos, handwritten annotations, and a grid structure complete with millimetric paper, reminiscent of a draft.
For headings, we have selected the wide grotesque font, Druk Wide. The Burton snowboard inspired this choice: the name on the board is set in a large, bold font across the entire width, and the headings in the long read function similarly to the lettering on the board. The main body text is set in the neutral IBM Plex Sans, which complements the headings without competing with them and offers excellent readability.
