HOW I WORK

post

The Task: To make a picture book about science from an existing script — with room to edit and make it my own. The client’s goal was to produce an accessible and engaging book on the scientific method for kids. The key question was how to combine narrative and infographics so that the topic truly clicks with the reader. My idea was to use the main characters and a step-by-step explanation to make the topic accessible and easy to understand.Target audience: Primary: children aged 6–10 who find «serious» science boring. Secondary: parents (30–45) looking for enriching leisure without pressure, and teachers who need lively materials. As an author, I speak to them through my product and through a warm, open manner.

My first step was to study the script closely and explore which explanatory schemes would suit the topic best. Through trial and error, I narrowed it down to the most effective options.

The next step was to develop a visual style for the book that fully met the client’s expectations.

The next step was to design the book’s spreads in a spot-illustration style while keeping the narrative lively and clear.

Once the concept was approved, I proceeded to a more detailed storyboarding stage, with typography development running in parallel.

The Brief: Conduct an independent interview with an activist — someone involved in any form of activism — and turn their story into a comic.A comic report about an hour spent with the inclusive jazz band Moonberry Jam, which hosts specialised music sessions and cultural events for families raising children with developmental disabilities.

The first step was to record a 90-minute interview with the protagonist of the comic. Only then did I begin developing the initial concepts.

Next, I developed the spot-illustration spreads and a detailed storyboard.
