Project Concept: «In Order of Things»
In the last four years, Russia has been undergoing a period of profound socio-political transformation. The former way of life has given way to new realities, chief among which are protracted geopolitical conflicts that fundamentally change people’s daily lives. The project asks: how do people’s needs and conceptions of what is necessary shift amid instability? I am interested in how familiar objects lose their previous value, while things once deemed superfluous acquire new significance. The artist’s book, «In Order of Things, ” is dedicated to this theme. In this video, I reflect on the normalization of life under such circumstances.

The artist’s book explores the theme of normalizing a changing world order during periods of social turbulence, focusing on how people’s perception of necessity shifts. This is evident in how human needs for various everyday items evolve—what people sell and what they buy.I select photographs and classified ads from Avito sourced from Rostov-on-Don, Sochi, Kursk, Bryansk, and other Russian cities. These range from listings for military gear and children’s clothing to urgent real estate sales and searches for new pet owners. This juxtaposition demonstrates the extent to which global geopolitical events penetrate ordinary life. The book is presented in the form of a pull-out calendar for 2026. The sequence of dates links the ads to specific moments in time, and the recurring page structure underscores the unbearable expanse of time.
