The uniqueness of Nikolai Ge lies in his innovative interpretation of Gospel subjects, which he approached through the prism of human drama and moral choice. His painting The Last Supper, which stirred public debate and was acquired by Emperor Alexander II, earned him the title of professor at the Imperial Academy of Arts. Another of his masterpieces, Peter the Great Interrogating the Tsarevich Alexei Petrovich in Peterhof, became the central exhibit of the first Peredvizhniki exhibition. In the late 1880s, Ge returned to Gospel themes with heightened drama and emotional tension, vividly expressed in works such as What Is Truth? and The Crucifixion.
